The Appalachian Mountains hold some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. They are also a top destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain climbing. A lot of history is also tucked away within the mountain chain. There are a number of day trips you and your family can take to experience the Appalachians for yourselves.
You can take a day hike on the Appalachian Trail anywhere along its length. The trail runs from Georgia to Maine.
One of the best daytrips is a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, North Carolina. It is a scenic drive that has breathtaking views year-round. The road is lined with wildflowers much of the year. The Parkway also acts as a jumping-off point for hiking, camping and picnics. The giant Biltmore Estate, home of America’s largest house, is nearby.
In Tennessee you can visit picturesque Gatlinburg, a small tourist town deep in the Smokies. Or take a day hike through Smoky Mountain National Park. You can also visit Lake Watauga, one of the most beautiful and least-visited lakes in the country.
If you go to Pennsylvania you can visit the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a wild bird sanctuary near Albany.
